Hey Matthew, what do you see.....

I see The Royle Family.....

BBC One showed a one off special of the Royle Family tonight. Proof positive of how good writers Caroline Ahern and Craig Cash are. Not since David Sullivan penned Only Fools and Horses has a comedy covered such an emotional range and has gone between these emotions so seamlessly. I will admit, i have'nt sobbed like i have tonight since Ben died in scrubs...

Leading quite fittingly into my next subject: reality television

I have Developed an idea for a new TV show where once more Joe public is the star. I call it

GO ON, CRY!

Here's how i see it panning out. Before production begins, the public are asked to nominate somebody to be on the show. The type of people suggested to take part would be people you have grievance with for whatever reason. After a sample is shortlisted for the show, researchers will scrutinise the history of these contenders for damning periods of their personal history or elemants of their past they are loathe to remember
.

For each show you'll get the first part shown early in the evening showing 3, maybe 4, people that the public will vote for, with only one of them to be in the 2nd part of the show to be aired later in the evening. The Negative historical montage for each votee will be shown to inspire the voting.

After the votes have been counted, the member of the public with most votes (under a pre-planned elaborate ruse) will be lead to a room with a table and chair (pretty much an interogation room). They are sat down and after a short wait, in walks an actor to provide the entertaining build up to the climax. Imagine a Chris Morris-esque figure coming into this sparsely furnished room and then launching into a very personal, desriptive, emotional and aggressive rant, tailored around the "victims" past. The actor will carry on with this until it is visible to the actor and the audience in the studio and nationwide, that our unwitting contestant is about to crack under the pressure.

To add cultural weight to the show (in the same vein as Deal or No Deal for example) the last thing the actor says to this person before he leaves the room is: "Go on, Cry". The actor leaves abruptly and we areleft with a very slowmoving close up of the contestant crying like the world is going to end tomorrow while the credits run at the bottom of the screen...

Small Stuff....

When im on the bus, listening to my MP3 player and certain types of song start playing, i like to look out of the window whimsically and pretend that someone is watching the film of my life, seeing me stare whimsically out of the window with the particular sounding song providing the soundtrack to the scene they are watching

todays song was Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

That is all....

Course he should, course he should, course he should...

Saturday nights are adventurous one more.

What with only getting one dose of doctor who a year, the idea that saturday prime time tv reaching any level i would deem entertaining, would usually seem a ridiculous. Yet i have been saved from weekend dose of tedium (not counting work) by the clever chaps behind the BBC's new adaptation of the Robin Hood legend.

So here i am again, playing advocate to the goggle box. And rightly so.

This new take (Maid Marian and her Merry Men aside) on the Robin Hood mythology has plenty of ingredients to make it a sure fire hit. Well written, well delivered by the actors and more importantly, sword play.

The Bows and arrows motif is there also, but i think the producers are taking liberties. Robin of locksley is TOO good with his bow. Im half expecting 'arrowtime' to kick in at some point. Its only a small quibble mind. Keith Allen as a bastard of a sheriff of Nottingham and a yummy looking Maid Marian more than make up for it....

Mary Mary quite contrary...

Yesterday, my mum went to the relevant council offices and handed in, for the final time, the keys to my nans house.

This is the house my mum grew up in, the house we all lived between moving home. The most saddening part is the garden. It was the best garden in the world as an infant. It was huge (even today it still seems massive), big enough for the two green houses and the wendy house my grandad built for my cousins, my brother and i. In the centre of the garden was a huge fish pond.

Sadly, after my grandad died, the garden was negleted. It looked a bit plain yesterday but still the most rousing part of a house none of us are ever going to get to see again.

Girls, eh?

Its no news to my friends that i am completely infatuated by my friend Claire. This i openly admitted to her last night. I was drunk, in a foul mood over something i probably had no business being in a mood over and it kinda just came out.

right now i feel:

1. bad- i feel i've let claire down by harrbouring these feelings
2. anxious - I dont know if she's talking to me
3. scared - of pushing her away because of my rotten behaviour

It all stems from the fact that i've seen friends be something more to her than i could ever be. this frustrates the hell out of me.
It should be acknowledged that (not counting drunken outbursts) i have never pressed this issue. I have kept this under wraps for as long as i could

i just want to be able to conentrate on being her friend again....

theproblemifacedaily....

For 2 weeks now i've had to navigate my PC using the keyboard alone (i destroyed my mouse in a fit of frustration). im getting quite adept at using all the shortcuts required, but it's still annoying as hell.

It does'nt help that my space bar is sticky and i pretty much have to twat the elongated mother fucker to make me a space (its taken lots of energy to get this far in my entry). In a related bout of frustration i prized the space bar off the keyboard to see if i could remedy the situation. To no avail. What makes matters worse is the fact that during my impromtu makeover, i corrupted the 'C' key. Any use of the letter results in about 3-4 attempts at creating whichever word im trying to construct. And the sound it makes when i tap it has more treble than the other keys....

Dedicated to John Ottoman...

A lot has happend since i last posted:

- I travelled by aeroplane for the first time ever. I made a short visit to Dublin to See Guns n Roses then flew back the next day. All 3 events were awesome.
- Got admitted to hospital. An abcess developed in my mouth. the infection that caused the abcess leaked into my body and started playing havoc with my diabetes. I had to have the abcess drained (THE most single painful experience i've had in my life so far), 3 teeth extracted and i had to stay on a ward with cantankerous, miserable, racist old men.

right now, family life is surrounded by a lot mortality issues. both of my Nans are approaching zero hour and its all a bit topsy turvy, emotinally speaking.....

"whats the buzz? Tell me whats a happening"

I Watched me 'Jesus Christ superstar' this week. A formidable effort as far as rock operas are concerned. It does'nt quite rock as much as 'Tommy' does but all the songs are worthy of the rock monniker.
The film did remind me of 'Tommy in a lot of ways. The final shot of the sun setting is very similar and constant alluding to jesus and his cult like status in the same way 'Tommy' did. As far as both films are concerned, JC Superstar came first so i'd have to accuse Ken Russell of thievery.
It reminded of 'Tommy' but made me want to watch 'The Blues Brothers' again.....

Soundtrack to your life....

The movie soundtrack of your life.
The rules:1. Put your music player of choice on shuffle
2. Scene one = first song played, scene two = second, so on.
3. No cheating/skipping
4. Pass it on

Opening Credits - Last Train home - Lost Prophets
Waking Up – The Bates - Billie Jean
An Ordinary Day – The Magnetic fields - Underwear (my "ordinary" days are really awesome or really mundane, but thats based on the scene and song name, not the songs context)
Falling in Love – The Magnetic fields - My Sentimental Melody (very fitting, seeing as it comes from the album '69 Love songs')
The Rumble – Ray stevens - Purple People Eater
The Break-up – David Cross - Socks and Shoes (a stand up monologue, not actually a song)
Getting Back Together – The Human League - Louise
Life's Okay – Ween - Big Jilm
The Mental Breakdown – Menswear - Being Brave
The Flashback – John williams - Back to the Future Theme (all the hairs on the back of my neck are tingling)
The Frat Party – The Divine Comedy - Generation Sex (the most fitting so far i reckon)
Everybody Dance Now – The Raconteurs - Blue Veins
Regretting – Mike Oldfield - The Top of the Morning
The Long Night Alone – Oasis - Mucky fingers
A Death – The Divine Comedy - Going Downhill Fast
End Credits - The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out

I want to see somebody make this film. See how they cope with the ever shifting tone...

*sniff*

I've just watched the last ever (as in no more they are'nt going to trick us again) Charmed. I have'nt been this choked up about a series finale since Buffy came to an end. No doubt something else will crop up in the coming years that will tug on my heart just as much as Buffy and charmed did. for now i'll have to settle for dramatic cliffhangers and gripping plots until some new set of supernatural females come and sweep me away. Besides, evil wont fight itself...

Friends forever....

I love Scrubs. I think it's one of themost well written TV programmes i have ever seen. Last noght i watched episode 20 of season 5 and it was easily the best ever episode of Scrubs there has ever been. Scrubs provides me with entertainment, happiness, sadness, annoyance, and acceptance in every single way that any one of my closest friends would. that is why i consider this TV programme my friend. Not merely a favourite TV show, but my friend...

Avast Behind *snigger*....

My pirate name is:

Mad Tom Flint

Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

Selling Penguins to Appollo Creed...

Last Sunday i went up north to Saltburn to visit Paul. The time i've spent up north was spent mostly by the coast so it proper felt like a holiday, so here's my holiday in all its glory...

The night i arrived in Saltburn, no sooner had i got my lugage down on the floor at Paul's, we were pub bound. After a couple of pints in town we headed to a pub called the ship by the beach. Taking a shortcut along the beach, Paul and i came across this:

I decided to call it Steve. Paul asked some passers by if the creture should be as far inland as we saw it, but we were assured it was going to be ok. It then barked at Paul in what i assume was dislike.

The next day was bank holiday monday, so we had a day out like pretty much everyone else in the country that day. We first parked up in a place called Runswick Bay.

What you cant see in the picture, further to the left, are the houses near the bay. Built into the bank almost, the whole place is a labrynthine complex that you can easily get lost in if you didnt know the place. Walking back up the bank was a task as well, i was having to stop for a breather every five minutes. The flats of Hull are comfort.

Next stop was the village in which Paul grew up, Hinderwell. I was shown a couple of sights icnluding the war memorial, the house where Paul grew up and the local "estate". One thing i did notice in th front Gardens of Hinderwell was trampolines

I spotted 4 within at least a 50 metre radius. to say they were everywhere would be an exaggeratin, but they had a definite presence in the village.

Paul took me to pub that day to watch middlesborough play. the football i can give or take, the venue however was of particular interest

This is Paul stood outside a pub that the locals (at least Paul did) as the "Back Alex". this is because its entrance is in a back alley. The kind you'd see big biins where other businesses back onto. Nice little pub it was and all.

Tuesday, paul took me To the town of Middlesborough. We tried our hardest to find somewhere of cultural signifcance to visit, but to no avail. i did take a trip to the local Forbidden Planet and bought a couple of comics and did look a couple of interesting sights. The Town Hall i thought looked pretty

The cascading waterfall thingy out side the crown court

and the huge arty bottle near the courts

After giving up on Middlesborough, we headed to somewhere not unlike Kingwwood, on the outskirts, to go bowling. Just like my birthday, we bowled a little (Paul won):

and then we went on to shoot the shit out of some zombies:

After a bite to eat at Burger King, home we went.

On the Wednesday we paid a vist to Whitby. This would be the second time i've been to Whitby but it felt different because we were visiting it as a place nearby rather than a grand day out to the town of Whitby. Even so, we wandered the place with as much aplomb as regular tourists. we all know what pleasues Whitby holds so im not going to bore with sights we've all seen before but i will show you the first ever picture i took using my camera's timer:

That's Paul and i atop the light house on one of the piers at Whitby.

As well as dining on the customary fish and chips and playing on the 2p machines, i sampled a chocolate kebab. Strawberries and marshmallows, skewered and covered in chocolate. dead sickly it was.

One thing i brought back with me from Saltburn was the knowledge of a local delicacy.

What you're seeing here is a Parmo. A dish known only to those in and around Teeside. I had two of these whilst away and they are load yummy. A nice alternative to a kebab after a nights drinking...
